About Black Forest Brooklyn

A German restaurant and beer garden with two Brooklyn locations, serving homemade regional specialties: schnitzel breaded to order, house-made spätzle, Nürnberger and Bavarian sausages from a NYC-based German butcher, Flammkuchen, giant soft pretzels, goulash, and a Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte made with Kirschwasser and sour cherries. Jamaican jerk chicken wings, based on co-owner Ayana's family recipe, sit alongside the German menu, and weekend brunch runs until 4pm. The bar pours German and Austrian draft beers in half-liter, liter, and two-liter boot sizes, German and Austrian wines, and cocktails built on Black Forest spirits such as Schladerer Kirschwasser and pear brandy; coffee comes from Brooklyn Roasting Company. Regular events include Premier League match screenings with live commentary, weekly trivia nights, and half-price wine bottles on Wednesdays, plus private events from 20-guest dinners to full buyouts.

Owners Ayana and Tobias both grew up in Germany's Black Forest but met only after arriving in Brooklyn, and opened the restaurant as a tribute to that. The first location opened in Fort Greene in 2013, followed by a second on Smith Street in Boerum Hill in the fall of 2017 with a large backyard. They also run a sister cocktail bar, Fritz.
