Organic farm, CSA, Poultry farm in Charlotte, NC
Deep Roots CPS Farm is a Black-owned urban farm in Charlotte, founded by husband-and-wife team Wisdom and Cherie Jzar. What began as a family homestead has grown into a 7-acre farmstead plus a 44-acre expansion in Union County, growing vegetables, herbs, mushrooms, black garlic, and pasture-raised chicken and eggs. Named 2023 Farmer of the Year, they also run a CSA program and community-focused agritourism.
What started as a family homestead grew into a mission: reclaiming Black food sovereignty. Inspired by Dr. Booker T. Whatley's vision, Wisdom and Cherie Jzar turned underutilized Charlotte land into a working farm, then expanded to 44 acres in Union County. Their son Alvamir now leads livestock. Deep Roots hosts a youth summer camp and farm-to-table dinners, growing food and community together.
