Cattle farm, Farm in Jakin, GA
Hunter Farms, Inc is a multigenerational family farm in the Cedar Springs community near Jakin and Blakely in southwest Georgia that raises beef cattle on pasture. The family has moved its beef operation from grain-based feeding to a grass-based pasture system and has stopped using synthetic fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides on its pastures. LocalHarvest lists certified organic pastures and certifications or programs including the American Grassfed Association, Animal Welfare Approved, Global Animal Partnership and GAP. The farm keeps a closed herd built on genetics from its original cattle and works with the Natural Resources Conservation Service and Georgia Organics on conservation practices. Historically the farm also grew cotton, peanuts, corn and other row crops. Buyers can reach the farm by phone or through its LocalHarvest and Facebook pages.
Mollie and John Wesley Hunter, Sr. started the farm in 1937 on about 50 acres. It grew into an operation of more than 1,000 acres, and John Hunter, Sr. received the Georgia Merit Farmer award in 1956. Ebony Magazine featured the farm in 1972. Their children now run the farm, and grandson Chad Hunter came back to lead its move to a sustainable grassfed beef program.
