About Melrose Umbrella Co.
A craft cocktail bar and restaurant in the Melrose shopping district, with a bar program built on house-made tinctures, syrups and tonics, plus natural wines, beer and non-alcoholic cocktails. Food service includes dinner, a taco bites menu, weekend brunch and takeout, along with regular and late-night happy hours. The interior, designed by M. Winter Designs with salvaged pieces from around the country, centers on an 1890s fireplace, an arched ceiling clad in New York City subway tile, and a 1920s wooden apothecary cabinet retrofitted as the back bar. The space is also available as an event venue, and the shop sells merchandise and gift cards.
Owners Zach Patterson and Austin Melrose set out to create a nostalgic setting celebrating the return of the craft cocktail on one of the world's most diverse shopping and dining avenues. The bar operates under Umbrella Hospitality Group. Its logo is a silhouette of James Melrose, a former Lord Mayor of York, England, known as the 'Grand Old Man,' who carried an umbrella instead of a cane until his death at 101. The building itself was constructed just after Prohibition ended with the ratification of the 21st amendment, a history the bar references throughout.
