About 100 Black Men of Los Angeles
100 Black Men of Los Angeles, Inc. (100BMLA) specializes in improving quality of life for African Americans and other minorities through educational and economic opportunity programs across the Los Angeles area. Its flagship initiative is major sponsorship of the Young Black Scholars Program (YBS), which supports academically promising Black students through their educational journeys. The organization also runs a Male Mentoring Program that pairs adult professional members with young men in need of consistent role models, and a Junior Investment Program that teaches financial literacy to youth, giving participants concrete tools for building long-term economic security. As a civic and community-based nonprofit, 100BMLA positions itself as a catalyst for disadvantaged and underrepresented segments of the Los Angeles community, working alongside cultural and civic partners such as the Geffen Playhouse on community education initiatives. 100 Black Men of Los Angeles, Inc. was founded in 1981 by Dr. William H. Hayling, MD, making it one of the longer-established chapters within the national 100 Black Men network. From its founding, the organization positioned itself as a 501(c)(3) civic and community-based nonprofit dedicated to serving disadvantaged and underrepresented Angelenos. Over more than four decades, the chapter has become a major sponsor of the Young Black Scholars Program and has expanded its programming to include a Male Mentoring Program and a Junior Investment Program focused on youth financial literacy. Its longevity has allowed it to build deep relationships with Los Angeles civic and cultural institutions, including partnerships with organizations such as the Geffen Playhouse.
