Barbecue restaurant, Catering food and drink supplier, Caterer in Washington, DC
Real wood-smoked barbeque served since 1990, with ribs, chopped pork, pulled chicken and brisket alongside sides such as Mexican street corn and watermelon feta salad, plus rotating seasonal specials. Locations in Washington DC, Arlington and Alexandria offer pickup and third-party delivery, and the company also runs food trucks, full-service catering for events and weddings, and a concession at Nationals Park section 117. House-made sauces, rubs and Malt Salt are bottled and sold in stores and through retail partners. The kitchens avoid high fructose corn syrup, MSG and artificial dyes, prepare food in-house daily, source from nearby farms when possible, and cook over real wood rather than chemically treated coals.
John Snedden began barbequing whole pigs in college, moved to Washington DC in 1983, won first place for ribs at the International Barbeque Competition that year, and started catering full-time from home in 1987. Rocklands opened in December 1990 at 2418 Wisconsin Avenue in Glover Park with seven employees, still its original location, and later added stores in Alexandria (2004) and Arlington (2007). In 1993 Snedden was asked by the White House for menu suggestions used at the Clintons' first State Dinner, and the company began bottling its Original Barbeque Sauce in 1997. Rocklands installed solar panels at its Arlington store in 2022 as the first Virginia business to use the C-PACE financing program, and has been recognized with sustainability awards from Virginia Green and DC's Department of Energy & Environment.
