About Roots Bookstore and Market

A Black-owned bookstore and market in Historic Liberty City carrying Black literature, history, poetry, children's and young adult titles, fiction, memoir, business, and more, with shelves that include voices from all backgrounds and a stated focus on honest, often banned books. Special orders for any title are available, along with a spotlight on local Miami authors and in-house apparel and accessories. The store also serves matcha through The Matcha Edit, hosts author talks, youth workshops, and open mics, and accepts donated books, which make up much of the inventory.

Roots grew out of The Roots Collective, co-founded in 2015 by Daniel "Danny" Agnew, an organizer connected to Dream Defenders who died in 2023; the store carries forward his mission under the banner #CompleteTheMission. The business moved through four spaces, including the Citadel, Black House, and Black House 2.0 on NW 7th Avenue, before settling on NW 15th Avenue in Liberty City, a street the owners chose deliberately for its history as a Black business hub. Co-founder Isaiah "Zaybo" Thomas also serves as Assistant Principal at Paul Lawrence Dunbar School in Historic Overtown. The owners position the store as a continuation of Afro-In Books & Things, opened nearby in 1978 by educators Mr. and Mrs. Wells.
