About Afrikan Black Coalition
The Afrikan Black Coalition (ABC) is California's leading organization dedicated to training and developing Black student leaders at four-year universities across the state. Through year-round leadership development, political education, and student organizing programs, ABC equips Black student leaders with the knowledge, skills, and practice needed to lead student organizations effectively and to champion the collective struggle for liberation for Black and oppressed communities worldwide, starting on their college campuses. Its guiding motto is "Politicize. Organize. Mobilize." ABC's programs include the ABC Leadership Institute, a year-long fellowship for current Black student leaders and recent graduates; Black Student Leadership Training camps grounded in Black perspectives and liberatory methods; the Uhuru Day of Service; Black Student Advocacy Day; and the annual ABC Conference, which brings together Black college students from California and neighboring states for a weekend of workshops, speakers, and strategy-building focused on strengthening the Black community and improving Black student success on campus. ABC's core values are Critical Consciousness, Student Leadership, Collective Power, and Self-Determination, and its vision is a world where Black students have the tools and resources to build systems of educational, economic, social, and political freedom. The coalition's membership spans University of California and California State University campuses across Northern, Central, and Southern California, organized into regional sub-regions, and it partners with school districts, businesses, foundations, and other organizations that support its mission.
It all started when the founders realized their neighborhood deserved better options for quality services. Instead of waiting for someone else to step up, they did it themselves. What began as a scrappy startup has blossomed into a beloved local institution. They've faced challenges, learned constantly, and never lost sight of why they started—to serve people they care about.
