About Hood Huggers International
Hood Huggers International runs Hood Tours and community projects in Asheville. Walking, driving and specialty tours bring the city's Black history and Affrilachian stories to life, led by guides who are charismatic storytellers. The organization also operates the Peace Gardens & Market, sells the CAP Playbook, and offers consulting, speaking and performance bookings. A portion of all proceeds is reinvested into the community through arts, environment and social enterprise work.
DeWayne Barton returned to Asheville in 2001. In 2003 he and his wife Safi Martin created the Burton Street Community Peace Gardens, now Peace Gardens & Market, in the historically African American Burton Street neighborhood where his family had lived four generations. He co-founded Green Opportunities in 2008, then left in 2015 to create Hood Huggers International, Hood Tours and the Community Accountability Plan framework.
