Founded in 1975 by Herb Hudson, a Harlem native, with the original location in Hollywood. Hudson's friends in Motown and television, including Stevie Wonder, Natalie Cole, and Redd Foxx, spread word of the restaurant to wider audiences. Diners have since included Snoop Dogg, Shaquille O'Neal, and President Obama, and the restaurants have been used as filming locations for television and movies. The Los Angeles Times has called it an L.A. institution and The New York Times a "beloved soul food chain."
