About Feminine Funk

Feminine Funk is a clothing brand and shop at 1 Moreland Avenue SE in Reynoldstown, Atlanta, selling statement t-shirts, sweatshirts and mugs built around self-love and body positivity. The writing on the shirts is the product. Slogans run from "Curvy Queen Energy" and "Thick thighs & Good vibes" to blunter lines, and the collections are grouped as Body Positive, Motivational, and R&B and hip hop. Sizes run from medium to 4X depending on the style. Nicole Grier founded the brand in 2011 after going looking for plus-size t-shirts with something to say and finding the category close to empty. She is plus-size herself and designs for the women she saw every day who were not represented in other clothing lines. The shop is 615 square feet in the One Moreland building, sitting between Cutters Lounge and Chi Chi Vegan Tacos. Grier calls the customer base the Funk Tribe. Shipping is free on orders over $75. The shirts went viral on Instagram and have been written up by Bustle, and the brand is listed among Atlanta's Black-owned businesses by Discover Atlanta and Official Black Wall Street.

Feminine Funk started in 2011 as an online store run out of the Bay Area. Nicole Grier had gone looking for plus-size t-shirts that actually said something, and found the category more or less empty. She was working another job at the time and funding the brand out of it. "Creating a brand from scratch has not been easy," she has said. "The saying BLOOD, SWEAT, AND TEARS has rung very true in my story." The obstacles were money and contractors — people who took the work and then either never finished it or handed back something unusable. The brand moved to Atlanta around 2018 and grew on Instagram, where the shirts spread far enough to draw national press. In late November 2020 — in the middle of a pandemic, when retail was closing rather than opening — Grier took a 615-square-foot unit at One Moreland in Reynoldstown and opened her first physical shop. "We just want people to come in and just feel good vibes," she said before the doors opened.
